South Africa became a democracy as a result of the historic 1994 elections. Since then there have been various laws put into place which seek to correct certain injustices of the apartheid past wherein Black South Africans were denied access to the wealth-making machinery of the country. These were first introduced under the auspices of Affirmative Action and which were then reinforced as the Broad Based Black Economic Equity Empowerment laws.
